Sleep Apnea Oral Appliance Therapy in Raleigh, NC

An Alternative for Patients Using CPAP

If you have been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) by a physician and have difficulty using a CPAP machine, an oral sleep appliance may be an alternative treatment option. These devices are custom-made to help support the airway during sleep, without the use of a mask, hose, or continuous airflow.

This page is intended for patients who already have a confirmed diagnosis of sleep apnea and have discussed treatment needs with a healthcare provider.

What Is an Oral Sleep Appliance?

An oral sleep appliance is a custom-fitted device that is worn during sleep. It is designed to help support the lower jaw in a slightly forward position, which may help reduce airway narrowing associated with obstructive sleep apnea.

These appliances are frequently used when:

  • A patient has difficulty tolerating CPAP equipment
  • A physician recommends exploring alternative treatment options
  • A sleep dentist and medical provider coordinate care together

Who May Be a Candidate

You may be a candidate for an oral appliance if:

  • You have a documented sleep apnea diagnosis from a physician
  • You were recommended or prescribed CPAP, but are having difficulty using it
  • A medical provider advised exploring alternative treatments
  • You are seeking a portable or travel-friendly option

Oral appliance therapy is used for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, or as determined appropriate by your medical provider.
It may also be used in combination with other treatment methods.

Our Treatment Approach

The process begins with sleep apnea diagnosis confirmation, where we carefully review your physician’s sleep study and treatment notes to understand the severity of your condition and ensure you are an appropriate candidate for oral appliance therapy. This confirmed diagnosis is required before we move forward with treatment. Next, you will have a consultation where we discuss your symptoms, daily routine, and lifestyle needs so we can recommend an appliance that fits both your medical requirements and your comfort preferences. For your convenience, same-day and next-day appointments are often available.

Once you are ready to proceed, we take digital impressions using precise 3D scans to create your custom appliance, which is a painless and quick process. After the appliance is fabricated, you return for an appliance fitting, where we check the fit, make any necessary adjustments, and ensure you can insert, remove, and wear it comfortably through the night. Finally, your physician may recommend a follow-up sleep study, either at home or in a clinic, to evaluate how well the appliance is working, confirm that your sleep apnea is being effectively managed, and make any additional recommendations for your long-term health and comfort.

Oral Appliance Therapy Frequently Asked Questions

What benefits do patients often notice with an oral sleep appliance?

While every experience is unique, patients commonly report that their appliances are small and easy to travel with, custom-fitted for comfort, quiet with no tubing or machine noise, and simple to care for and maintain. Results and comfort can vary based on individual anatomy, sleep apnea severity, and how consistently the appliance is used.

How many appointments will I need?

Most patients complete the process in about 2 to 4 appointments from start to finish. This usually includes the initial consultation, digital impressions, the appliance fitting, and at least one follow-up visit.

Is the process comfortable?

Yes, the steps are designed to be as comfortable as possible. Digital impressions are taken with 3D scanning technology, so there are no messy impression trays. During the fitting visit, we fine-tune the appliance so it feels secure but comfortable to wear throughout the night. Some patients may need minor adjustments over time to keep the appliance working and feeling its best.

Do I need a sleep study before getting an appliance?

Yes. A physician-confirmed diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea is required before oral appliance therapy can be provided. We rely on your sleep study and the recommendations from your medical provider to ensure that an oral appliance is safe and appropriate for you.

Is an oral sleep appliance covered by insurance?

Coverage varies by plan, but oral appliance therapy may be eligible under medical insurance when certain criteria are met. This often includes a physician-diagnosed sleep apnea, documented CPAP intolerance, and a recommendation that an oral appliance be part of your treatment plan. Our office can review your benefits, explain what your plan may cover, and provide cost estimates before treatment begins. Financing options are also available.
