A Gentler, Faster Way to Restore Your Smile
At Vista Dental Group in Raleigh, we use the latest LANAP® laser technology to make implant placement and gum treatments more comfortable, more precise, and faster to heal than ever before. Whether you’re preparing for dental implants or trying to save existing ones, LANAP allows us to regenerate bone and gum tissue naturally, without scalpels or sutures.
What Is LANAP?
LANAP (Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure) is a FDA-approved laser therapy that targets and removes infected tissue and bacteria while stimulating natural bone regrowth. It’s an advanced, minimally invasive alternative to traditional gum surgery, it is often used to prepare the jaw for dental implants or to treat failing implants (LAPIP).
Why Choose LANAP for Dental Implants?
LANAP offers several advantages for dental implants. This gentle, no-cut procedure uses a laser instead of scalpels or stitches, selectively removing diseased tissue while preserving healthy gum and bone. As a result, most patients experience faster healing and less downtime, often returning to normal activities within a day or two without a long recovery period. LANAP can also help regenerate bone naturally, improving implant stability and long-term success, while minimizing pain, swelling, and bleeding by sealing blood vessels as it works for a cleaner, calmer recovery. In some cases, it can even be used to treat or save failing implants (LAPIP); if an implant is loose or infected, LANAP may help stabilize it without needing a full replacement.

LANAP Frequently Asked Questions?
Is LANAP painful?
Most patients describe LANAP as much more comfortable than traditional gum surgery. The laser targets infected tissue with minimal impact on healthy areas, which helps reduce pain, swelling, and bleeding. We’ll also use local anesthesia and, if needed, sedation options to keep you relaxed throughout your visit.
How long does it take to heal after LANAP?
Healing times vary, but most patients return to normal activities within a day or two. Because there are no scalpels or sutures, the gums typically feel less sore than after traditional surgery. You’ll still need to follow our post-treatment instructions closely to protect the healing tissue and get the best long-term results.
Can LANAP help me avoid a bone graft for dental implants?
In some cases, yes. LANAP is designed to remove infection and stimulate natural bone regrowth around the teeth and jaw. For certain patients, this can improve bone levels enough to support dental implants or make implant placement more predictable. At your consultation, we’ll review your X-rays and determine whether LANAP alone is appropriate or if additional procedures are needed.
Can LANAP treat a failing dental implant (LAPIP)?
LANAP technology can be used in a similar way to treat failing implants, a procedure often called LAPIP. The laser helps disinfect the area, remove infected tissue, and encourage the surrounding bone to stabilize the implant. While not every failing implant can be saved, LANAP/LAPIP may offer a less invasive alternative to removing and replacing the implant.
Am I a candidate for LANAP?
You may be a good candidate if you have gum disease, bone loss, bleeding or tender gums, or sensitivity around an existing implant. LANAP is also helpful for patients who have been told they need gum surgery or a bone graft but want a gentler, more conservative option. During your visit, we’ll evaluate your gums, bone levels, and overall health to see if LANAP is the right fit.
