Endodontic Services & Gum Treatments

General Endodontic Care

Endodontics is the dental specialty focused on the health of the pulp, nerves, and root canal system inside your teeth. Our North Raleigh endodontist is specially trained to find the source of tooth pain and treat conditions that go beyond the scope of general dentistry. If something is wrong on the inside of your tooth, this is the care you need.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal therapy removes the infected or damaged pulp from inside your tooth, cleans and shapes the root canals, and seals the tooth against reinfection. Most patients find the procedure no more uncomfortable than a routine filling. Root canal treatment saves a tooth that would otherwise be lost.

Cracked Tooth & Pain When Chewing

Sharp pain when biting is often caused by a crack in the tooth that has reached the nerve. Cracks can be hard to detect without specialized tools. Our endodontist uses advanced imaging to locate and assess the damage accurately. Treating a cracked tooth stops the pain, prevents the crack from spreading, and in most cases saves the tooth entirely.

Apicoectomy

An apicoectomy is a minor surgical procedure that removes the infected tissue at the tip of a tooth’s root when a previous root canal wasn’t completely successful. A small opening is made in the gum, the infected root end is removed, and a filling is placed to seal it. The procedure is precise and highly effective.

Loose Teeth Stabilization

A loose permanent tooth is not something ignore. It needs to be evaluated quickly. When looseness is caused by trauma or root-level damage, our endodontists can stabilize the tooth by splinting it to neighboring teeth and, if the pulp is involved, following up with endodontic care. Doing so will give the tooth a real chance at full recovery.

Gum Boil Treatment

A gum boil is a visible sign of a bacterial infection around the root of a tooth. It will not go away on its own, and has the risk of spreading if left untreated. Treatment involves draining the abscess and performing root canal therapy to eliminate the source. Relief from the pain and pressure is quick, and the tooth will be saved.

Discolored Tooth (Nerve Damage)

A tooth that darkens or changes color from the inside is telling you something is wrong. Usually, the discoloration is the result of trauma, infection, or a nerve that has deteriorated over time. It may not hurt, but it’s something you shouldn’t ignore. Our endodontist will assess the tooth and, if needed, begin endodontic care to treat the underlying nerve damage.

Endodontic Retreatment

Endodontic retreatment addresses a tooth previously treated with a root canal but hasn’t healed correctly or has developed a problem. Your endodontist will reopen the tooth, remove existing filling material, clean and reshape the canals, and reseal everything properly. This provides a second chance at saving the tooth.

Endodontics Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Endodontist?

An endodontist is a dental specialist focused on diagnosing and treating conditions that affect the inside of the tooth. This includes the pulp, nerves, and root canals. Endodontists complete two to three years of advanced specialty training beyond dental school. Their focus includes root canal procedures, endodontic surgery, and treatment of other complex cases.

When Should I See an Endodontist Instead of My Regular Dentist?

You should consider seeing an endodontist if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Persistent tooth pain that doesn’t go away
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers
  • A dental abscess or gum boil
  • A cracked tooth with possible nerve involvement
  • A previous root canal that hasn’t healed properly

Your general dentist may refer you directly, but self-referrals are always welcome. Contact our North Raleigh office, and we’ll help determine the right next step for your situation.

How Do I Know If I Need a Root Canal?

Common signs include a persistent toothache, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, or pain when biting or chewing. You may also notice a tooth that has darkened in color or a small bump on the gum near the affected tooth. In some cases, a tooth that requires treatment may show no symptoms at all. If you’re experiencing any of these, come see us for an endodontic consultation and begin treatment.

How Much Does Endodontic Treatment Cost?

The cost of endodontic treatment depends on the tooth, its complexity, and whether it’s an initial procedure or a retreatment. Our team will review your situation during your consultation. We’ll provide a transparent breakdown before any treatment begins.

Will My Insurance Cover Endodontic Services?

Coverage varies by plan. Our team will work with your insurance provider on your behalf and walk you through any anticipated out-of-pocket costs before treatment begins. Financing options are also available to help manage costs.
